Some of this is inanely bland. Yawn alert!
I was raised in a middle class family, played in the band in school, did nerdy things like play Dungeons and Dragons and Traveller, read Tolkien, Herbert, Card, Brooks, and all the literary greats in Fantasy and Sci-fi, as said, a nerd.
I got a degree in history (nerd!) after determining that trying to be a band director wasn’t the right path for me (band geek!)
After graduating college armed with the requisite B.A., I learned that the promised 30K a year job was NOT just some entity handing them out like they promised! (It was the late ‘80’s).
What to do?
The promise of being a professional pilot beckoned!
Except…
It was now the early ‘90’s and airlines were going out of business, dropping like flies, or being cobbled together by megalomaniacs (hey Lorenzo and Icahn!) so there were a glut of pilots and a dearth of jobs.
So what to do now?
Become an aircraft dispatcher! TA DA! (Look them up…we’re NOT in the tower!)
So for the last 30+ years, that’s what I did until COVID hit and while working from home on special projects, writing became an outlet during the down times…
